What is a pimple and how does it develop?

The skin has many glands that produce sebum to protect the largest organ from drying out or from harmful environmental influences, for example. This sebum is transported to the skin surface through hair ducts.

However, it can happen that the glands produce too much sebum. If the excess sebum cannot drain away because the pore is closed by horny cells, for example, it accumulates and clogs the pore. A blackhead emerges. There are two different types of these nasties: White blackheads make themselves known as firm, whitish bumps under the skin – without a visible tip or pore opening. What distinguishes a normal pimple from an acne pimple?

Can creams cause skin blemishes?

Incorrect or excessive skin care can also lead to the formation of pimples: Skin care products that are too rich – i.e. water-in-oil compositions – can worsen the skin’s appearance. You should therefore always look out for the “non-comedogenic” label on skin care products. This means that a product does not additionally clog the pores.

Do pimples appear because I clean my skin badly?

Excessive hygiene can destroy the protective layer of the skin. Lack of hygiene, on the other hand, is not a reason for oily skin and pimples. On the contrary, those who have a lot of pimples often tend to over-soap, scrub and disinfect, which tends to harm the skin and does not solve the pimple problem. If you suspect your skincare routine may be the cause of pimples, going completely without is worth a try.

Where can blemishes appear?

Pus-filled pimples can cause trouble not only on your face – your shoulders, back and chest can also be affected by blemished skin. If these problems occur more frequently, the specialist will try to find the cause – metabolic diseases are the most likely cause. Here one should also heed the advice “hands over the covers”: “Whoever tampers with the sebaceous glands and tries to squeeze them out, only makes everything worse.”

What helps against pimples on the buttocks?

Also unpleasant and very embarrassing for many men: pimples on the buttocks. Yet they can be avoided quite simply. “You should simply change your underwear every day – and your bedclothes every week. It is probably only a minor inflammation of the hair follicle,” says dermatologist Afschin Fatemi, medical director of the S-thetic Clinic in Unna. Nevertheless, you should get a mild, disinfecting shower gel from the pharmacy so that the pimples disappear quickly. “But if you have large, pus-filled pimples on your butt, you’re probably suffering from a special and severe form of acne,” the specialist warns. In this case a dermatologist must look at the inflammations. By the way, 95 percent of those affected by the problem are smokers, because nicotine often leads to inflammation in the sebaceous glands.

What can you do against pimples?

The skin renews itself every 28 days – if you are prone to pimples, you should help earlier! Basically, to combat blemished skin, it helps to regularly use an exfoliating scrub to rub away dead skin flakes that might otherwise clog pores. Chemical peeling with fruit acids, as offered by numerous dermatologists, can also be effective against pimples.

Any acne therapy you need to last for several weeks if it is to work. Depending on the skin type, different treatment strategies can be useful.

Dry skin needs a mild washing gel without alcohol. “Alcohol disinfects, but at the same time dries out the skin – this is fatal for people with little moisture in their skin. Afterwards, a moisturizing cream should be applied, which can also be lipid-replenishing,” says dermatologist Josef Pilz.  In addition, people with dry skin should use peelings only rarely.

Combination skin Is somewhat more difficult to care for because the face must be treated with different products. While the T-zone, i.e. forehead, nose and chin, should be depleted of oil, the cheek area must be moisturized at the same time. One to two additional peels per week do mixed skin good.

Oily skin is most prone to blackheads and pimples. The horny layer is much thicker in comparison, which means that the pores close more quickly and become clogged easily. Especially people with oily skin should exfoliate their face twice a week to remove dead skin cells, dirt and excess oil. And they can also use a tonic with alcohol.

At the same time, they should not forget to moisturize their skin so that it always stays nice and supple. In any case, you should avoid all products that contain fat, otherwise you could overload your skin with it. Much better: creams that moisturize but regulate fat.

When should I go to the doctor with blemishes?

The more often you suffer from festering pimples, the sooner you should seek help instead of fighting it alone with over-the-counter productsIf there is no clear improvement in the skin’s appearance after 4 weeks, it’s time to go to the dermatologist: Off to the dermatologist! This also applies to all those who are still in puberty. The dermatologist can assess the form and severity of the acne and evaluate the chances of success of the various treatment options.

These include ointments with exfoliating and antibacterial agents such as benzoyl peroxide or vitamin A acid, which are applied locally. Both are well tolerated, but may sting a little, especially at the beginning of treatment. Creams containing the antibiotic erythromycin, on the other hand, are applied extensively to affected areas of skin.

Is squeezing really so bad?

Yes, yes and yes again! Basically, the following applies to all pimple sufferers: Pressing and squeezing are forbidden! Above all, this rule applies to pimples that are deep in the skin. On the one hand, pressing and squeezing with the fingers can injure the skin, causing permanent scars and deep craters.

Second, dirt on your fingers can get more bacteria into the pores, which only makes the whole drama worse. Better: Cooling! Cold ensures that the pimple no longer hurts so much. The inflammation is reduced and the swelling and redness subside.

Can I prevent blemished skin with the right diet?

The connection between diet and skin problems is not yet sufficiently proven. Nevertheless, there is evidence that certain foods can improve the skin’s appearance from the inside out and thus prevent the formation of new pimples. Zinc, for example, should be an important part of your diet: cheese, oysters, beans and sunflower seeds contain a lot of it.

In addition to zinc, people with a tendency to blemished skin should make sure they get enough selenium in their diet. It is responsible for skin renewal and also protects against free radicals that accelerate skin aging. Good sources of selenium are milk and vegetables as well as brown rice or oats.

Extra Tip: Also take plenty of Iron in your diet. It supports the transport of oxygen into the skin and is therefore very important for a good complexion. Foods such as meat, fish and radishes contain iron. And last but not least: vitamins, vitamins, vitamins!

Numerous medicinal plants have proven their effectiveness in the fight against pimples: You can make effective anti-pimple compresses from the dried leaves of witch hazel or chamomile blossoms – simply boil 3 to 6 tablespoons of the plant parts in a liter of water, steep for 15 minutes, soak clean cotton cloths with the decoction and apply to the affected areas. Nettle tea helps internally and externally against annoying acne.

A particularly effective pimple killer is tea tree oil: The anti-inflammatory and wound-healing oil is dabbed directly onto the pustules with a cotton swab. To stabilize the skin’s natural pH value and stimulate blood circulation, diluted apple cider vinegar helps.

Mix a little vinegar with water in a ratio of 1:4 and spread on the pimples with a cotton swab. Furthermore, a mask made of baking soda or aspirin can also help – mix a small amount with some water, apply the paste to the pimples and leave it until it dries.

Conclusion: fight pimples, avoid scars

“The earlier you start treatment, the greater the chance of avoiding the worst,” says Dr. Marianne Placzek, dermatologist at the University Dermatological Clinic in Munich.
